Three years ago, Lancaster University celebrated their astonishing 50 years of operational research — in 1963, Pat Rivett became the first OR professor outside of the US.
Videos of the event quite worth your while can be found here, including a hillarious short clip of Pat on OR that was aired on BBC:
Complexity is my business, as it is with all operational research scientists. Nowadays everything in industry and government is pretty complicated. You can’t run your business making decisions by trial and error. All you’ll get is trial and catastrophe. In operational research, we work out on paper first what the results of different decisions would be, so we really know what’s the best thing to do before we have to do it.
